When I was asked to try out a Porsche Race Car Experience and report back on what I thought about it I didn't need to be asked twice. I love driving and I have experienced various days including Caterhams at Thruxton and a day at Brands Hatch which included a variety of different vehicles. This day with Rupert Lewin Racing was, however, quite different to anything I had experienced before.
The day began with breakfast at trackside. I was in a small group of just 9 people so the day had a nice familiar feel. We were based in the pits and it felt as though we were racing. The first step was a briefing for everyone who was on the track that day. There were about 100 of us in the room; some were members of clubs and others owned supercars. There was an eclectic mix on track including historic Aston Martins, Ferraris, Caterhams and an original Mustang from the 1960s. To my untrained eye it seemed to be a Shelby but I know they're rare as hens' teeth.
After the briefing and some tuition for our smaller group in the pits it was time for a familiarisation lap. Whenever I am taken around a track I find it hard not to grin from ear to ear and this was no exception. By this time I could barely wait for my own chance and the circuit was starting to fill up with cars. During the course of the day I had 8 15 minutes sessions which gave me 3 or 4 laps each time. I drove a road going 911, two race prepared Porsche's which are currently being used the Porsche Open and The Monster, a stripped out older race prepared Porsche which really was an experience. One of the highlights of the day is that each of us were taken out by racing driver Rupert Lewin in his 996 GT2R. The car is incredible but Rupert really can drive. It was without a doubt the most exhilarating drives of my life and I emerged from the car with a big smile and still shaking from the adrenaline.
The half day experience is £500 plus VAT and the full day is £1,000 plus VAT. Discounts are available for groups. You may think that this is expensive, but you shouldn't compare it with standard track days. You get really close so you really feel that you are racing, the quality of tuition is excellent and you get a lot of time behind the wheel. I found myself going round Donington in my sleep for about a week. You don't get that feeling that you're a number being churned through as quickly as possible. This is certainly one of the top racing experiences available.
Helmets and race suits are provided.
You need to take your driving licence.
Experiences are available at Donington Park, Brands Hatch and Silverstone.
Lunch is in a nice 3 start hotel and we were looked after very well all day by Kirsty and Sarah.
