Teambuilding has become a global phenomenon over the last couple of decades. Task based teambuilding has its roots in military training and can be traced back to ancient times. Modern style outdoor tasks and particularly Command Tasks have their origins in Royal Navy training programmes developed during World War II.
The Japanese took a more ironic view of teambuilding and developed courses to encourage the 'Samurai Spirit' of their soft executives, often by humilating them or subjecting them to extreme physical or psychological pressure. The western version was scaled down to activities such as It's A Knockout, which are great fun and allow people to get messy without humiliation.
The teambuilding industry has evolved into large and highly professional operation. Activities revolve around fun to ensure benefit from social team bonding. Recent legislation has ensured that events are respectful of the individuals who participate and there is a high emphasis on health and safety.
